The Global Initiative took inspiring and successful steps in the 1990s for universal disarmament and for the ecological salvation of the planet. We were at it for five years. Many young people got involved and brought their unique creativity to the process. We were invited to the UN in Geneva and New York, we worked with the Swiss government, and we sparked a popular movement. 150000 young people participated in the International School Strike for Peace in 1996.

From the beginning, the GI Global Initiative was supported with signatures by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Russian President Gorbachev.

The title of the initiative at that time was „Global Initiative for Immediate Disarmament of All Countries for the Purpose of Ecological Salvation of the Planet.“

In the spring of 2022, the world is moved by the Ukraine war, and old fears are awakened.

In 1999, in cooperation with the Swiss government, we had a World Peace Candle sent to the UN in New York. This candle should be lit as soon as there are no more nuclear weapons.

Unfortunately, they still exist!

In this situation we offer again with great joy our experience, our humor and our confidence. We will succeed! We will have no more nuclear weapons by the year 2042. All countries of the world will abolish their military by 2122 at the latest. We are working with governments and NGOs.

I ask: What do we want? Do we want a new era of peace, do we want paradise on earth? Or do we want to tinker along forever? Let the nuclear powers continue to ride on their ego-trip, on their power-grab, on their fear?

Russian President Gorbachev showed the world the right direction in 1988 when he offered unilateral disarmament of Russia.

Our project for the year 2022:

A match for disarmament
We, the inhabitants of this wonderful planet, send matches to the governments of nuclear states. A match in a letter, that’s easy, isn’t it?

The nuclear power that is the first to disarm will then have the great honor of lighting the peace candle in New York – at the memorable moment when all other nuclear powers have also disarmed.

It is possible! Imagine: Thousands and millions of matches arrive at the nuclear powers. A peaceful wave of the inspiration arises. That’s what we do!

Russian people can also send matches to their government, anonymously if necessary 🙂 .

So: send a match to one of the nuclear powers: USA, Russia, France, UK, China, North Korea, Israel, India, Pakistan.

You can simply write: To the government, in the respective capital. If necessary use a translation program…

Here a list of addresses:

USA: The Government of USA, White House, Washington D.C., USA, President Joe Biden
UK: 10 Downing Street, London SW1A 2AB, Prime Minister Boris Johnson
India: The government of India, New Delhi, India, President Shri Ram Nath Kovind
Pakistan: Islamabad, Prime Minister Imran Khan
China: Peking, President Li Keqjang
Israel: President Naftali Bennet, Jerusalem
North Korea:
France: Gouvernement de France, Paris, France, Président Macorn

Switzerland: Mr. President Ignazio Cassis, Bundeshaus, 3000 Bern

I will add more details as soon as I can

Here is a text that you are welcome to copy. Please do not contact me until your match is in the mailbox 🙂 . But it may not be necessary for you to contact me. Better send more matches to more governments 🙂

A match for disarmament

To the government of N.N.:

We are not setting the world on fire! We are lighting the world peace candle at the UN!

With your help it will be possible that nuclear disarmament will be accomplished by the year 2042.

I hereby send you, dear government, this match.

If you are the first nuclear power to disarm, you may light the peace candle in New York. Namely, when the other nuclear powers have also disarmed.

That gives a nice pile of matches for world peace!

Thank you for your commitment! You can do it! We can do it!

  1. Matches for Swiss president Ignazio Cassis and the UNO

President of the Swiss Confederation Ignazio Cassis hands a match to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, at the UN Opening Assembly on September 20, 2022.

He asks the Secretary-General and the General Assembly to do everything possible for nuclear disarmament in the next 20 years.

He informs about the action „A match for disarmament“.

Committed inhabitants of Switzerland can now send matches to President Cassis with this message.

Alternatively, they can send postcards with a picture of a match. One free option is the „Postcard Creator“ from Swiss Post. With this tool, you can send a card every day!

Documents of the Global Initiative of the 90s:

Letter of Federal Councillor Flavio Cotti 1999:

The World Peace Candle, now in New York:

Parts of the letter of Flavio Cotti, translated:

Dear Mr. Schutzbach!
I am extremely pleased that the Global Initiative – like other non-governmental organizations – is working tirelessly for ecological improvements and disarmament.

As I said in my speech on January 21, this objective reminds me of some aspects of my work as a Federal Councillor in both the FDHA and the FDFA. The moving moment on that cold winter’s day, when together we celebrated the solemn ceremony of lighting the peace candle in Bern. It is indeed – as the
the Global Initiative says – an impressive memorial for the immediate disarmament of all countries
for the purpose of the ecological salvation of our planet!
To send a signal not only in Bern, the capital of Switzerland, but also on the international stage of the UN headquarters in New York, I am gladly prepared to present the General Secretariat of the United Nations with the World Peace Candle on July 10, 1999. A representative of the Swiss
Mission in New York can present this symbol of our country’s will for peace to a representative of the
representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations.
Personally, the Secretary-General accepts gifts only on the occasion of the General Assembly or on special
special occasions and from the hands of heads of state or government. Where the World
candle finds its place is decided by a „Comité des arts“, in which representatives of the various UN agencies sit on the committee.
As a contact person here in Bern, Mr. Christian Fotsch (Tel. 031-323 55 89) from the UNO section of my department.
I was very honored and pleased by your invitation to take over the patronage of the peace workshops.
and pleased at the same time. I wish you good luck, strength and success in this endeavor.
Citizens like you, dear Mr. Schutzbach, help such an idea achieve a breakthrough!

I wish you personally as well as the Global Initiative a lot of perseverance, patience and success in the future.

With kind regards and best wishes for the future
Flavio Cotti
